Recognizing and Treating Alopecia in Men and Women
Significant hair loss occurs in 20% of adult men and women and it presents in many forms. The type we choose to discuss here is the most common form called alopecia it is responsible for two thirds of all the causes of hair loss in men and women.

To determine the proper treatment for hair loss in women and men it is very important to obtain a correct diagnosis. Because in one-third of male and female patients hair loss is due to other potentially serious medical conditions, extra attention must be given to the male and female patient to rule out these medical conditions before proceeding on to treat alopecia.

As the name implies, alopecia is a hormonal as well as a genetically based hair loss, resulting in a thinning that occurs to terminal hair in both women and men. Both male and female hair thinning can begin as early as the mid to late teens, but is frequently not fully expressed until the 40s. There can be significant differences between male and female hair thinning.

Cancer and Hair Loss

You’re beginning chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Your doctor or nurse has informed you that the treatment may cause you to lose your hair. Many men and women experience a vast array of emotions such as anxiety, depression, fear, confusion, and anger. People with cancer often have fears about the side effects from treatments, mostly related to the fear of the unknown.

At Ara’s, we will inform you and educate you about the many available options we offer that can help you to cope with the trials and tribulations associated with chemotherapy, the loss of hair, eyelashes, and skin conditions.

Hair loss from cancer treatments is an emotional and stressful experience, but there are things you can do to make it better. It is time to be good to yourself. You deserve it!

We offer a full line of services to help you look good and make you feel better. Patients and clients at Ara’s are entitled to:

1. Complimentary consultations in our salon.
2. Cranial Prosthesis (wig) Pool (available for patients without insurance)
3. Will accept insurance and/or file insurance for patients/clients.
4. We make home and hospital visits.
5. Also available—Custom made Cranial Prosthesis for men, women, and children.
6. Patients/Clients of Ara’s will receive facials, manicures, thera bath treatments or any other salon services at half(1/2) price during their chemotherapy treatment.

Our caring staff and comprehensive program shows you how to use wigs, turbans, scarves, and makeup to help you look good and feel better in a private setting. A unique program which we are proud of and happy to provide.

LOOK GOOD & FEEL BETTER
We have a complimentary consultation service (45 min.) for all cancer patients. Public programs are also held in which you receive complimentary make-up; lessons on all issues of hair skin, and nails as well as accessories. Our program is designed to enhance & improve the patient/client’s life during treatment.

Pattern Baldness

Classic male/female-pattern baldness is usually diagnosed based on the appearance and pattern of hair loss.

Scalp hair grows from the hair follicle at an average rate of 1/2 inch per month. Each hair grows for 4 to 7 years, then rests, and finally falls out. A new hair then begins growing in its place. At any one time, about 85% of the hair is growing and 15% is resting.

Baldness occurs when there is a progressive miniaturization of the follicle resulting in shorter and finer hair. The end result is a miniature follicle with no hair. The follicle, however, remains alive, suggesting the possibility of new growth.
